Information you give me

The site has no accounts and no forms. The savings calculator runs in your browser and nothing you type into it is sent anywhere. If you email me, I use your email only to reply and, for business listings, to set up and check the listing. I do not add you to a mailing list, sell it or share it.

Server logs

The site's host keeps standard server logs, such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested, for security and to keep the site running.

Analytics

I use analytics to see which guides are useful, what questions people arrive with, and where pages are hard to follow. The tools are:

• Google Tag Manager (Google). It loads the two tools below and collects nothing about you on its own.
• Google Analytics 4 (Google). It records the pages you view, roughly where you are (country and city, worked out from your IP address), your device and browser, how you reached the site, and what you do on a page: how far you scroll, how long you read, which links you click (including links to government and retailer websites), whether you use the savings calculator (not what you type into it), and when you copy text (only how much, never the text). It sets cookies named _ga and _ga_ followed by an id.
• Microsoft Clarity (Microsoft). It records how visitors use a page, such as clicks, scrolling and mouse movement, as session recordings and heatmaps, so I can see where a page is hard to use. It masks text you type. It sets cookies named _clck and _clsk.

I do not try to identify you, and I do not combine this data with anything else about you. I see it as reports and anonymous recordings.

Advertising

This site uses Google AdSense to show ads, which helps cover its running costs. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this website and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet. You can opt out of personalised advertising in Google's Ads Settings, and opt out of some other vendors' cookies at aboutads.info. Google chooses the ads, not me, and an ad on this site is not an endorsement.

Where the data is stored

Google and Microsoft process and store this data on their own servers, which may be outside Australia, for example in the United States. Their own privacy policies apply to it.

How to opt out

• Install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, which stops Google Analytics on every site.
• Block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site works without them.
• Use private browsing, or a browser or extension that blocks trackers.

There is no cookie banner. This site follows the Australian approach of telling you here what is collected and how to opt out.

Changes

If affiliate links or anything else that collects data is added, this page will be updated first.
